Meta AI Chatbot Under Trial on WhatsApp in India: What Users Need to Know

WhatsApp

WhatsApp is currently experimenting with the Meta AI chatbot feature in India, as per a report from WABetainfo, a platform dedicated to tracking upcoming WhatsApp features. Selected users in India now have access to the Meta AI chatbot.

What Exactly is the Meta AI Chatbot in WhatsApp?

Announced by the company in September 2023, the Meta AI chatbot is a new virtual assistant that users can interact with similarly to a human. It operates on Meta’s custom model and Llama-2. Like typical generative AI chatbots, users can pose questions to the Meta AI assistant, powered by Bing Search and capable of responding to user inquiries. The report outlines two testing methods currently underway. Firstly, WhatsApp introduces the Meta AI chatbot into the search bar, albeit restricted to specific countries. In India, however, Meta has positioned the chatbot within the top app bar for convenient user access.

Despite the integration of Meta AI, the privacy of users’ conversations and calls will remain intact, as they are end-to-end encrypted. Neither Meta nor WhatsApp will have access to them.

As per the report, this feature is currently undergoing limited testing and will only be available to a select group of users. To check if you have access to Meta AI, consider downloading the latest version of WhatsApp for iOS or Android. While we attempted this on the most recent version of WhatsApp for iOS, the feature was not accessible. Nonetheless, the report suggests that the feature will gradually become available to users over the upcoming months.
